President Aliyev concludes a successful and productive visit to Washington

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev participated in the 4th Nuclear Security Summit on March 31 - April 1, 2016 in Washington, D.C. In his remarks at the Summit President Aliyev touched upon Azerbaijan’s contribution to strengthening of global nuclear security, including measures to prevent possible use of Azerbaijan’s territory for illicit nuclear materials trafficking. Expressing Azerbaijan’s commitment to further efforts to enhance nuclear security and non-proliferation regime, President Aliyev underlined “full support to President Obama’s activities and efforts to strengthen global nuclear security”.

Along with participating at summit sessions, President Aliyev held bilateral meetings with high-level US Administration officials including Vice-President Joseph Biden, State Secretary John Kerry and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. President Aliyev and Vice-President Biden discussed “cooperation on security issues, including counterterrorism, and the importance of the Southern Gas Corridor to boosting European energy security.” In his meeting with President Aliyev, Secretary Kerry expressed “U.S. support for Azerbaijan’s efforts to become a regional trade hub”, affirmed “U.S. support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity” and emphasized the US commitment to work with the sides of Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict to achieve a comprehensive settlement “based on the principles of international law, the UN Charter, and the Helsinki Final Act.” President Aliyev and Secretary Pritzker discussed a broad range of economic issues including expansion of Azerbaijan-US trade relations and energy cooperation, and the activity of American companies in Azerbaijan.

At the margins of the Summit, President of Azerbaijan also met several attending heads of state and governments to discuss development of bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Moreover, President also met with several US top business executives to strengthen business relations with Azerbaijan as well as exchanged views with prominent public figures.
