President Aliyev awarded by the Vatican
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was honored with the Medalla Sede Vacante, one of the Vatican's highest awards, on November 4. The medal was presented by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, on behalf of the Holy See. President Aliyev praised bilateral relations and stressed the importance of joint projects. The president also highlighted the organization of Azerbaijan-related exhibitions in Vatican museums, and said that bilateral cooperation would continue to develop.
Azerbaijan American Alliance holds Gala dinner
The Azerbaijan America Alliance hosted its second annual gala dinner titled "Celebrating Today, Building Tomorrow" at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC on October 31. The purpose of the reception ceremony was to strengthen social and economic ties between the two countries, and stress the importance of friendly bilateral relations.
This year's event highlighted innovative architectural developments in Azerbaijan and the growing relationship between the United States and Azerbaijan, while celebrating the ancient and rich culture of the key ally in the South Caucasus region. Opening the reception, in which nearly 600 invited guests from Capitol Hill, the diplomatic corps, think tanks, and academic and business communities took part, Azerbaijan's ambassador to the United States Elin Suleymanov said the best method of diplomacy is to present a country's culture.

Foreign Minister Addresses UN Security Council
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov recently addressed a meeting of the UN Security Council focused on strengthening the partnership between the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
"A just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East and the comprehensive resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict continue to remain one of the most pressing issues in the agenda of both the United Nations and OIC. Azerbaijan welcomes efforts aimed at the resumption of direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine,” the minister said.
Foreign Ministry: Azerbaijan made important contributions at UN Security Council for justice
During its UN Security Council presidency, Azerbaijan made important contributions to the restoration of justice on the international level and principles of international law, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a recent statement. During this period, Azerbaijan, as a reliable partner, developed close cooperation with the UN, with the UN Security Council member states, with other international institutions and non-governmental organizations. A high-level meeting on the development of cooperation between the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was also held at the initiative of Azerbaijan. Chairmanship of the UN Security Council was transferred from Azerbaijan to China in November.
US senator congratulates Azerbaijani president on re-election
Speaking in the U.S. Senate on October 30, Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) congratulated President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people on their recent election. Senator Burr emphasized the role of Azerbaijan as a strategic partner of the US in the fight against terrorism, maintaining energy security, as well as the transit of U.S. and NATO materials to Afghanistan via Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani energy potential becomes major topic of discussion at European energy summit
The future role of Azerbaijan as an energy supplier and transit country has become a major topic of discussion at the European Energy Summit held in Istanbul on October 30-31. The summit also discussed EU priorities in the energy market, European energy security, the development of the Turkish energy sector and European infrastructure technologies. The summit was attended by Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz, TAP External Affairs Director Michael Hoffman and other officials.
Ambassador: Azerbaijan actively promotes inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue
Azerbaijani Ambassador to U.S. Elin Suleymanov addressed a recent conference organized by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Washington, DC on cultural cooperation. The Ambassador highlighted Azerbaijan’s current position as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and that it is the first of the Caucasus and Central Asian countries to be elected to that seat. Suleymanov also emphasized the issue of humanitarian and cross-cultural interaction. The Ambassador stressed that Azerbaijan, located at the junction of continents and civilizations, actively promotes inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue. He cited the work of the Baku International Humanitarian Forum which was officially opened by President Ilham Aliyev as an example.

The 3rd Baku International Humanitarian Forum opened recently at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva attended the opening ceremony of the Forum. The forum is a high-profile global scientific and political platform for tackling the challenges facing humanity in the 21st century, holding dialogues, discussions and the exchange of views on a wide range of issues of humanitarian cooperation/ With its rich traditions of cooperation among different cultures, civilizations and religions, Azerbaijan is the ideal venue for holding such events.
Azerbaijani embassy in U.S. holds event over Zangilan occupation anniversary
The Azerbaijani embassy in the United States recently organized an event dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Zangilan region's occupation by Armenia. The event aimed to promote awareness in the American society about the Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani territories and the injustices facing the people of Azerbaijan. Speakers said that the last 20 years have not undermined the resolve of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to return to their native lands, and expressed confidence in the successful outcome of Azerbaijan's efforts for justice.

It is symbolic that this commemoration day is marked when Azerbaijan holds the rotating chairmanship of the UN Security Council, as one of the non-permanent members of this most authoritative international body. Just as Azerbaijan works to make a contribution to overcoming global challenges and maintaining peace in different corners of the world, the people of Azerbaijan expect a more active involvement of the international community in securing lasting settlement to Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, on the basis of the norms and principles of the international law.
Azerbaijan deserves international community's support
At this stage of its development, what Azerbaijan needs is not continuing international pressure or scrutiny from the international media outlets. Instead, what we need is strong support in our journey towards strengthening democratic standards. Looking ahead, my country will stick to its strategic vision of establishing a mature democracy. We do this not to please our critics, but because this is the right direction in which to take our young country ahead.
Azerbaijani mobile operator introduces Internet services on board of AZAL planes
Azerbaijani mobile operator Azerfon LLC (Nar Mobile trademark) has now deployed Internet services on board of the planes of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), the airline told Trend recently. The company said the data transmission service is available on the nine airliners of the company. The passengers, in addition to the use of voice services and SMS and MMS, can read news, check e-mail, communicate on social networks.
Investments in Azerbaijan’s alternative energy sources exceed $380 million
Approximately 300 million manats have been invested so far in the development of alternative and renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan, Director of the Azerbaijani State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources, Akim Badalov said. The share of alternative energy sources in the total consumption of Azerbaijan is planned to be increased to 20 per cent by 2020.

The international architectural presentation of the Heydar Aliyev Center was held in Baku on November 5. "Masterpieces created by our national architects in various periods are the pearls of the cultural life. They help to foster and develop the national vision and the aesthetical taste. Still today, a number of architectural monuments impress specialists by their unique, original style and very attractive features," Anar Alakbarov, Director of the Heydar Aliyev Center, said.
Azerbaijan increases agricultural export by over 5 times in 10 years
Azerbaijan's agricultural export increased from $115.3 million to $595.3 million in last ten years, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Ilham Guliyev said while speaking at a recent event on a professional holiday for the country's agricultural workers. According to the Deputy Minister, Azerbaijan has turned from a country that imports agricultural products into an exporter over the last decade.
