President Ilham Aliyev took part in Syria conference in London
The ‘Supporting Syria and the Region’ conference kicked off in London Feb. 4. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev took part in the conference at an invitation of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, UK Prime Minister David Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Emir of Kuwait Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
President Aliyev: Azerbaijan to play important role in promoting values of peace
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev addressed the “Education” session held as part of the “Supporting Syria and the Region Conference” in London Feb. 4. “We have a very profound sympathy for the Syrian refugees,” President Aliyev said at the event. He noted that Azerbaijan itself suffered from a humanitarian disaster and crisis in the beginning of its independence, in the beginning of the 1990s when Azerbaijan’s neighbor Armenia launched an aggression against the country. “As a result of that aggression almost 20 percent of our internationally recognized territory became occupied,” said the president, adding Azerbaijanis were subjected to ethnic cleansing, and more than a million Azerbaijanis became refugees and internally displaced persons.

President Ilham Aliyev met US under secretary of defense for intelligence
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with US Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Marcel Lettre in Munich. The sides hailed the successful development of bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and the US. The sides emphasized that the bilateral relations reached a level of partnership in a variety of fields. It was also noted that there were good prospects for cooperation in the fight against terrorism. The sides also exchanged views over the issues of mutual interest.

American Jewish Committee believes in importance of US-Azerbaijan strategic partnership
CEO of the American Jewish Committee David Harris says: “At AJC, we have long believed in the importance of the strategic partnership between Washington and Baku. In today’s tumultuous world, the United States needs friends and allies it can count on, especially in such significant and sensitive areas as the southern Caucasus region and the Caspian Sea. And, of course, Azerbaijan, with larger neighbors, needs the dependability and constancy of its relationship with the US to help address its security and other pressing concerns”.
Azerbaijani deputy FM calls for peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict
In his address to the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov spoke about current security challenges in the South Caucasus and stressed the need to revitalize the Minsk Group for the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Governments key to more Black Sea energy amid low prices, forum told

Depressed crude oil prices won’t necessarily doom ambitious transportation projects west from the Black Sea and beyond if participating countries and investors don’t panic, speakers said at an Atlantic Council forum. Elin Suleymanov, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to the US, said, “The lesson in constructing the Southern Gas Corridor is that you have to have a strong political and financial commitment from the companies as well as the countries. Fortunately, 95% of the gas already was sold and helped finance the project itself. Regardless of prices, Azerbaijan is fully committed to completing it.”
Europe wants to see Azerbaijan in EU Energy Community
Europe would like to see Azerbaijan among the countries of the EU Energy Community, said Janez Kopač, director of the Energy Community Secretariat. He made remarks at a meeting with the Azerbaijani Energy Minister Natig Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s Energy ministry said. The sides discussed the current level of cooperation and its perspectives during the meeting. In addition, Azerbaijan’s important role in ensuring Europe’s energy security, the importance and progress of the Southern Gas Corridor project were also noted.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov says: “The development of relations with Central America, and in a broader context Latin America, is of significant importance to Azerbaijan's foreign policy. The political relations with Central and Latin American countries have been rapidly developing over the last few years. Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, and Mexico have recently opened their embassies in Azerbaijan. Along with our embassies in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Cuba, we have recently established diplomatic missions in Columbia, Peru, Uruguay, and Chile. Further proof of good political relations, Azerbaijan obtained large support from Latin American countries when it became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council”.
Delegation of Azerbaijani parliament visits Israeli Knesset
A group of Azerbaijani parliamentarians paid an official three-day visit to Israel. They held a meeting with chairman of Israel-Azerbaijan inter-parliamentary friendship group Avigdor Lieberman, who made a number of proposals to develop relations between Israel and Azerbaijan, and also suggested to involve non-governmental organizations in their efforts to contribute to the strengthening of the bilateral ties. The Azerbaijani delegation also met with chairman of the Knesset Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense Tzachi Hanegbi, and Speaker of the Knesset Yuli Edelstein.
